The coming of technology has brought with it a lot of change in our contemporary world. The way we react to things, as well as the kind of things that attract our attention, have all changed. The way we interact with others and the way we carry out businesses have also changed.
Also with the coming of technology has brought with it new kinds of jobs with which people become gainfully employed.
New Jobs Came With Technology
Along with the change that technology brought our ways, came new jobs that people can do in the contemporary world. Advancements in technology including the creation of the internet, mobile phones and automobiles have made it possible for the new jobs to be created and people have cashed out heavily from these jobs.
In the last 14 years, new trendy jobs have taken over the world and many people, especially young ones have become obsessed with them.
Below are some of those jobs:
- Blogging
This is one of the most talked about jobs in the world at the moment. In Nigeria, many persons, especially young men and women have realized that they can actually make a lot of money from blogging and have consequently taken to the internet to make milk the cow. Most of these people who are now interested in blogging, draw inspiration from the popular blogger, Linda Ikeji.
Linda Ikeji is arguably the most popular and most influential blogger in Africa. She is also the richest. Linda made headlines in October 2015 when she bought a grand new house in Banana Island, Lagos. The house reportedly cost a whooping N500 million and according to Linda, she financed the purchase of the house entirely from what she makes from her blogging.
After she made the announcement, many young Nigerians decided to go into blogging and those who were already bloggers decided it was time to step up their game and make more money like Linda.
There is no doubt at all that blogging is one of the most sought after online businesses in Nigeria currently but just 15 years ago, it was nonexistent.
As at 2002/03, people relied more on newspapers and magazines to get news and stories of happenings around the world. In Nigeria for instance, people didn’t go online to read breaking stories of political happenings and entertainment events around the country. They instead, liked to buy their newspapers and magazines for that purpose.

Technology however has changed all that. These days, people rarely read traditional newspapers. They prefer to go online to read news on social media and online media platforms to get read up.
- Social Media Management
Many young Nigerians are currently social media managers. They held to manage social media accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and others and by so doing, they help to build followership and increase credibility on the pages.
Now, you need to understand that 15 years ago, these social media platforms did not even exist at all. This means there could not have been social media managers.
15 years ago in 2003, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram never existed. Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, Twitter was co-founded by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, Noah Glass, Evan Williams in September 2015 while Instagram was founded by Kevin Systrom in October 2010. All these social media platforms were created and introduced less than 15 years ago.
However, since their creation, they have gained a lot of popularity around the world and have been adopted by businesses. Companies now have to hire experts to manage their social media accounts. These people are simply called Social Media Managers and the job they now handle has been made available only because of technology.
- YouTube Content Creation
YouTube is the world’s most popular video sharing platform on the internet. Virtually everyone with a video to share with the world goes to YouTube to post the footage.
Many people have made a lot of fame through YouTube over time.
YouTube was co-founded in 2014 by Jawed Karim, Steve Chen and Chad Hurley and has become a serious means of money-making on the internet. This is because people who create content on the platform and who get a lot of views, get paid periodically. These people are now simply called YouTube Content Creators.
Over time, it has been revealed that top YouTube Content Creators have made several millions from their art. Some of this money comes from the sponsorship deals they bag as well as advertisements.
Technology has made this possible and since YouTube was created in 2014, no one 15 years ago imagined it would get so popular and become a source of income for many.
- Mobile App Development
Mobile app development is currently one of the many jobs people consider “juicy” because of its bankability. In a world where people are addicted to their phones, the creation of apps in order to add more functions to the mobile device is a welcome development.
When phones were first created, there weren’t many things to do with them. Some 15 years ago, the only things one could do with the phone would be to play snake or box games and make calls or maybe take hazy photos if the phone had a camera at all.
Now, things are very different. With the creation of apps, the phone has been given many other functions that owners can use. Apps have become a very important part of our lives because from chatting to organising diaries and entertaining ourselves with our phones or even making shopping lists and transacting businesses online, we now depend largely on apps. In fact, it is now quite difficult to imagine life without them.
Today, billions of people own a Smartphone each and many more are buying new ones. This has created massive jobs for app developers because the need for apps and their developers has become really huge.
Many companies and businesses now have their own mobile apps and many more are trying to build theirs. Mobile app developers are therefore some of the busiest workers in the world of technology.
- Uber Driving
The coming of Uber has changed the way people travel these days. In fact, it has revolutionized everything. In times past you would have to stand beside the road to flag down a cab and then argue back and forth about the price with the driver before proceeding to where you are headed. In addition to this, the drivers may be very rude and arrogant towards you and the cabs may be even be quite dirty. However all these have changed now.
These days, with not so much money in your pocket, you can journey in luxury inside an air-conditioned and neat car to where you want to go to and to top that, with a polite driver. Drivers are nice because they know passengers have to rate them with stars after the journey and bad rates affect them.
Because too many people now depend more in Uber to travel round their cities, more persons are now being recruited into the service.
15 years ago, Uber was non-existent. The service which was founded in 2009 works with technology. This is because you have use the Uber app to request for a ride and then get connected to a driver who is near you. You will not need to argue back and forth with the driver because your fare is already calculated and charged via the payment method which you have linked to the Uber account you use. Sometimes, though Uber allows you to pay in cash.
Uber has created millions of jobs around the world and doing much more at the moment.
