The new Dragon’s breath chili which has been referred to as the killer pepper may as well be the hottest pepper in the world.
The pepper which was developed by a Welsh, Mike Smith, who is a hobby gardener has been said to out beat the Carolina Reaper which was the hottest pepper in the world and clocked at around 2.2 million on the Scoville rating (the measurement used to quantify heat).
According to Smith who is a UK farm grower, this pepper which he developed while working with professors at the Nottingham Trent University must not be eaten.
The Dragon’s breath chili, according to the Huffington Post, was not meant for eating because of how hot it is.
Speaking to DailyPost, Smith said the pepper could cause a life-threatening anaphylactic shock if consumed without care. He stated that someone tried consuming the plant but went numb for two days, while others couldn’t come to swallow it.
The name of the pepper came as a result of its Welsh beginning.
So why was the Dragon’s breath chili developed?
The pepper was developed, according to Dailypost to serve medical purposes. As a result of how hot the pepper is, it could actually numb your skin. As such it would be able to serve as an anesthetic because the oils that come from it are so potent that they can numb the skin.
According to Smith, “this was developed because a lot of people are allergic to anesthetic, and this can be applied to the skin because it is so strong it numbs it.”
More than just for people who are allergic to anesthetics, oil from the pepper could as well be used in countries that cannot afford anesthetics due to financial constraints.
Hottest pepper in the world
According to Smith, he has written to Guinness book to confirm that the Dragon’s breath chili is the hottest pepper in the world. This is since it recorded up to at 2.48 million on the Scoville rating.
How hot is pepper? Hot enough to be felt in 2.48m drops of water even if it’s just a single drop of the peppers capsicum oil that you drop in.
