So you have a young chap or you are a young chap who is very good at science and technology? Maybe it is for you in particular that the eight edition of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards was launched. The award was designed as a collaborative effort between Eutelsat and MultiChoice Africa as it aims to get secondary and high school students all over Africa to be interested in science and innovation.
What you should know about the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards
It was in 2011 that the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards was first started, and since then, it has got close to 80 thousand young Africans participating in the contest with many coming up with great ideas.

The 7th edition of the Essay competition of the DStv Eutelsat Star Awards was won by 18 years old Amos Mumbere of the Ntare School in Mbarara in Uganda while the poster competition was won by Rasheed Taher a 19-year-old student at the Financial Training Centre (FTC) in Tanzania.
Topic
Currently, satellites are being used in a variety of ways but there is always room for expansion and growth.
Write an essay or design a poster on areas you believe the full potential of satellites has not yet been explored or embraced.
Criteria for Essay:
- Language: English, French or Portuguese
- Length: 1200 – 1400 words
- Must be typed in Arial 12, 1.5 spacing and pages to be numbered or it must be handwritten, but clearly legible
- Pages must be numbered
- Only hardcopy entries will be accepted.
- Entries may include illustrations, graphics, or diagrams
- References (all sources consulted during the preparation of the entry)
Criteria for Poster:
- Design a creative poster by illustrating an idea on the competition topic. The poster must be accompanied by a creative explanation/summary in the following format:
- Title
- Summary idea/concept
- Explanation of idea
- References (all sources consulted during the preparation of the entry)
- Language: English, French or Portuguese
- Entries must be between A3 Size (420 X 297 mm) and A1 Size (594 X 841 cm)
- Only hardcopy entries will be accepted. No electronic submissions will be accepted.
Eligibility and Guidelines
- The Awards are open to students between 14 and 19 years of age in secondary, high or combined schools in the countries where MultiChoice has operations
- Entry forms (including conditions and rules) and competition collateral will be made available in English, French, and Portuguese
- Entry forms will be available at selected MultiChoice Africa Offices. These are all included in the Entrants from.
- Entry forms may also be downloaded from the website: dstvstarawards.com
- Only complete entries submitted by post or deposited at the nearest MultiChoice Africa country or regional office, or in the case of South Africa at the MultiChoice Africa Reception at 251 Oak Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg, will be accepted (see a list of offices on entry form)
- Entries may be prepared and submitted in English, French or Portuguese
Prizes
- Overall essay award winner:
A trip for the winning student and their parent/legal guardian to Eutelsat in France and attendance of a rocket launch.
- Overall poster award winner
A trip for the winning student and their parent/legal to the MultiChoice offices and the South African Space Agency at Hartbeesthoek

A DStv installation, including a dish, TV, decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet A DS
