Just as there are many universities, so also are there many illegal science and technology universities in Nigeria. These universities are among the 58 universities that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has released as those running illegally in the country. They are described as illegal because they have not been licensed and they have failed in meeting the minimum national standard for education, hence they have been shut down.
Illegal Science and Technology Universities In Nigeria
1. University of Industry, Yaba, Lagos
Located in Lagos State, this University has been in existence for quite some time. The university has been in existence for some time and it was listed by the NUC in 2012 among the illegal universities in Nigeria, as well as in 2015. The university does not have a website, just as there are no records about the university on the internet.
2. Christians of Charity American University of Science and Technology
This is yet another university that has been around for some time, even though it has likewise been listed by the NUC among the universities that are not legal in the country. Located in Nkpor, Anambra state, there is not much information about the university or the courses it offers.
3. Enugu State University of Science and Technology (Gboko Campus)
The Enugu State University of Science and Technology is one of the best universities of technology in Nigeria. It was started in 1980 and has since then, graduated many students in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Even as the university has been accredited and remains legal, it has a campus which is located in Gboko, Benue State. It is this university that the NUC has deemed illegal.
4. National University of Technology, Lafia, Nasarawa state
Started in 2010, this university which is located in Nasarawa State commenced academic activities by September 2012. While it would continue with its academic activities, it was placed on the illegal Universities in Nigeria list by the NUC in 2014 and relisted again in 2018.
5. Saint Augustine’s University of Technology, Jos, Plateau state
The Saint Augustine’s University of Technology is also among the Illegal Science and Technology Universities In Nigeria. The University which is located in Jos, Plateau state has not got its accreditation even as it has been operating for some time now. The Saint Augustine’s University of Technology has like other, also been listed in a prior list of illegal universities in the country in 2015.
6. Federal College of Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Abuja
This institution was established for the training people for traditional and natural medicine, but then the NUC does not see it as operating legally in the country. Located in Abuja, there was a dispute in 2013 as regards the operation of the institution in Lagos after it was closed down by the Medicine and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN). According to the provost of the college, the institution was legal and the MDCN had no right to shut it down.
However, according to HOD Inspectorate of MDCN, Dr. Henry Okwuokenye who shut it down, said apart from the fact that the institution had not been accredited to offer the courses it did, the provost, Dr. Idowu Ogunkoya did not have the license to stand in as the provost.
